Access Network

The access network refers to the network segment between the subscriber connection and the provider's higher-level network. It represents the final stretch to the customer and is therefore often described as the last mile. Access networks are implemented using fibre optics, copper-based DSL, coaxial cable, mobile networks or microwave links. The quality of this segment directly determines the bandwidth, latency and availability of the connection. Typical components include DSLAMs, OLTs, switches, access points and mobile base stations. From the access network, traffic is forwarded through the backhaul into the core network. In enterprise environments, the access network also covers the connection of workstations, servers and IoT devices to the company's own network infrastructure.
