Presentation Layer

The presentation layer is the sixth layer of the OSI model. It ensures that data exchanged between different systems and applications is provided in a format that both sides can interpret correctly. Its functions include converting data formats and character encodings and, depending on the communication model, encrypting, decrypting and compressing data. This enables systems to exchange information even when they use different internal data formats. The presentation layer operates between the session layer and the application layer. In modern networks, many of its functions are integrated directly into applications, protocols or software libraries. Within the OSI model, it therefore provides an important foundation for the correct representation and processing of transmitted data.
