Media Access Control Security (MACsec)

Media Access Control Security, or MACsec, is a security standard for Ethernet networks defined by IEEE 802.1AE. MACsec protects communication between directly or logically connected network components at Layer 2 of the OSI model. Ethernet frames are encrypted and protected against manipulation and unauthorised access, supporting the confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of transmitted data. The technology can be used for connections between switches, routers, servers and other compatible network devices. For security key management and exchange, MACsec can be combined with the MACsec Key Agreement protocol, or MKA. MACsec is particularly suitable for enterprise, campus and data centre networks where Ethernet connections require additional protection against interception and manipulation.
