Precision Time Protocol (PTP)
Precision Time Protocol, or PTP, is a network protocol designed for highly accurate time synchronisation across distributed devices and systems. Defined by the IEEE 1588 standard, it can achieve sub-microsecond synchronisation accuracy depending on the network architecture and hardware. PTP uses a reference clock, known as the Grandmaster Clock, to synchronise other clocks within the network. Special timing messages are exchanged to determine and compensate for clock differences and transmission delays. Network devices can support functions such as Boundary Clocks or Transparent Clocks to improve synchronisation accuracy. PTP is particularly relevant in telecommunications, industrial automation, measurement systems, energy infrastructure and other time-sensitive network environments. Compared with NTP, PTP can provide significantly higher timing accuracy.
