Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN)
A Virtual Local Area Network, or VLAN, logically divides a physical network into multiple separate network segments. Devices can therefore be assigned to the same broadcast domain regardless of their physical location. VLANs are primarily implemented by switches at Layer 2 of the OSI model. IEEE 802.1Q is commonly used to identify VLANs on connections between network devices, with each VLAN assigned a VLAN ID. Segmentation can separate departments, device types or different network services, supporting administration, security and network management. Communication between devices in different VLANs requires Inter-VLAN Routing through a router or Layer 3 switch. VLANs are a fundamental component of modern enterprise networks and are widely used to structure LAN infrastructures flexibly.
