Access Point
An access point is a network component that connects wireless devices to a wired network via Wi-Fi. Using the IEEE 802.11 radio interface, laptops, smartphones, printers or IoT devices associate with the access point and gain access to the local network and the internet. The uplink is usually provided via Ethernet, frequently combined with Power over Ethernet for the power supply. Modern access points support multiple frequency bands, multiple SSIDs, VLAN segmentation and encryption based on WPA2 and WPA3. In larger environments, multiple units are configured and monitored centrally through a wireless controller or cloud management platform. Features such as roaming, band steering and mesh operation ensure consistent coverage. Access points therefore form the technical basis for reliable enterprise wireless networks.
