Optical transceivers: Flexible fiber optic connections for professional networks

Optical transceivers are essential components for modern corporate networks—they enable data transmission via fiber optics at high speeds and over long distances. Whether single-mode transceivers for long distances or multimode transceivers for shorter distances: the right choice ensures scalability, efficiency, and investment security in your IT infrastructure.

What is an optical transceiver?

An optical transceiver converts electrical signals into light signals and transmits them via fiber optic cables. The transceiver modules are interchangeable and are typically used in network components such as switchesrouters, or firewalls

Differences exist depending on:

  • Transmission rate (e.g., 1G, 10G, 25G, 100G, 400G)
  • Form factor (SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, etc.)
  • Range (multimode up to approx. 550 m, singlemode up to 40 km+)

Form factors at a glance: SFP, QSFP & Co.

Different designs are used depending on network requirements:

SFP & SFP+

  • SFP (1G SFP): Standard for Gigabit connections
  • SFP+ (10G SFP): For 10 Gigabit Ethernet – compact, energy-efficient, and widely used
  • SFP28 (25G SFP28): For modern data centers and backbone connections
  • SFP56: Supports 50 Gbit/s – for high-throughput applications
  • SFP-DD: Double density for two signals in the smallest of spaces

QSFP formats for higher bandwidths

  • QSFP (40G QSFP): 4x10G – established in core and aggregation layers
  • QSFP28 (100G QSFP28): Standard module for 100G backbone connections
  • QSFP-DD (200G/400G QSFP-DD): Eight-channel high-performance transceivers – for hyperscale networks
  • QSFP56: Supports 200 Gbit/s via 4x50G – future-proof solution for data centers

Singlemode vs. Multimode Transceivers: When to use which?

Single-mode transceivers

  • Ideal for long distances (up to 40–80 km)
  • Low attenuation and long range
  • Use in wide area networks or between buildings

Multimode transceiver

  • Cost-effective for shorter distances (up to approx. 500 m)
  • Lower installation costs thanks to inexpensive OM3/OM4 fibers
  • Frequently used in server rooms and building networks

Tip: When selecting a transceiver, make sure it is compatible with your switch or router. Most manufacturers provide compatibility lists or recommendations.

Frequently asked questions about optical transceivers

What is the difference between SFP and SFP+?

Both formats are identical in design, but differ in speed: SFP supports 1 Gbit/s, SFP+ up to 10 Gbit/s.

Are optical transceivers compatible across manufacturers?

Many devices only accept transceivers with the correct code. it-market therefore offers compatible alternatives to OEM modules that are fully functional and tested – e.g., 100G QSFP28 for Cisco, HPE, or Dell.

What does “hot-swappable” mean?

Transceivers can be replaced during operation – without restarting the system. This minimizes downtime during maintenance or expansion.
