Basic services

Basic services refer to the fundamental IT and network services on which an IT infrastructure is built. They include DNS for name resolution, DHCP for the automatic assignment of IP addresses, NTP for time synchronisation, directory services such as Active Directory, as well as file, print and mail services. These services are not business applications themselves but form the technical foundation that allows applications, servers and end devices to work together reliably. If a basic service fails, a large number of dependent systems are usually affected. For this reason, basic services in corporate networks and data centres are typically designed with redundancy and subject to close monitoring. Careful planning, protection and documentation of these services is therefore essential for stable and secure IT operations.
