Ethernet Virtual Private Network (EVPN)

Ethernet Virtual Private Network, or EVPN, is a networking technology for providing virtual Layer 2 and Layer 3 networks across a shared infrastructure. EVPN uses BGP as its control plane to exchange information about reachable devices, MAC addresses and IP addresses between network components. It is commonly combined with VXLAN to create scalable overlay networks in data centres and cloud infrastructures. Compared with traditional Layer 2 technologies, EVPN enables more efficient traffic management and supports redundant network architectures and multihoming. The technology is particularly common in modern spine-leaf networks. EVPN helps organisations and data centre operators build large, flexible network infrastructures and efficiently connect virtual network segments.
