Firewall
A firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic. Based on a set of defined security rules, the firewall decides whether to allow or block specific traffic. Firewalls have been the first line of defense in protecting networks for over 25 years. They act as a barrier between protected and controlled areas of the internal, trusted network and untrusted, external networks. A firewall is either hardware-based, software-based, or a combination of both. There are various firewall systems that can be used depending on the network.
