Mail Server

A Mail Server is a server system that enables the sending, receiving and management of email. The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or SMTP, is primarily used to transmit messages between mail servers and to send messages from email clients. IMAP or POP3 are commonly used to retrieve and synchronise email. A Mail Server processes incoming messages, assigns them to the appropriate mailboxes and forwards outgoing messages to other mail servers. Additional functions can include spam filtering, malware protection, encryption, archiving and access controls. Mail servers can be operated within an organisation's own IT infrastructure, hosted in a data centre or provided as a cloud service. For businesses, reliable mail servers are an important part of digital communications and require appropriate security measures against spam, phishing and unauthorised access.
