Network cable
Network cables provide wired data transmission between end devices, switches, routers and patch panels. The most widely used type is twisted pair cabling with RJ45 connectors, classified in performance categories from Cat 5e through Cat 6 and Cat 6A to Cat 7 and Cat 8. The category determines the usable bandwidth and therefore the achievable transmission rate of between 1 and 40 Gbit/s. A distinction is made between unshielded versions and shielded variants such as S/FTP, which are required in environments with electromagnetic interference. Flexible patch cables with stranded conductors must be distinguished from rigid installation cables with solid conductors used for permanent wiring. For longer distances and higher data rates, fibre optic cables are used. Category, shielding, length and professional termination are decisive for performance.
