Network Time Protocol (NTP)

Network Time Protocol, or NTP, is a network protocol used to synchronise the system clocks of devices across IP networks. NTP enables computers, servers, switches, routers and other network components to align their internal clocks with reliable time sources. Time servers are organised hierarchically using Stratum levels, with highly accurate reference sources such as atomic clocks or GNSS receivers forming the basis of the hierarchy. Consistent system time is important for many IT processes, including log files, authentication, security analysis, monitoring and the chronological correlation of network events. NTP uses UDP port 123 for communication. Correct time synchronisation simplifies administration and troubleshooting and supports consistent timestamps across complex enterprise and data centre networks.
