Packet Capture

Packet Capture refers to the process of capturing and storing data packets transmitted through a network interface or a specific network segment. Captured packets can subsequently be analysed in detail, including source and destination addresses, protocols, ports, packet sizes and timing information. Network administrators commonly use Packet Capture for troubleshooting, performance analysis, protocol diagnostics and the investigation of unusual network activity. Tools such as Wireshark and tcpdump can capture and analyse network traffic. Depending on the network infrastructure, traffic can be made available for analysis through methods such as port mirroring or network TAPs. As captured packets may contain sensitive or personal information, appropriate data protection and security requirements should be considered when collecting, storing and analysing packet data.
