Port Security

Port Security is a security feature on managed switches that controls access to individual switch ports based on MAC addresses. Administrators can define which MAC addresses are permitted or specify the maximum number of addresses allowed on a port. If an unauthorised address appears or the configured limit is exceeded, the switch can take different actions depending on its configuration. These may include dropping affected packets, logging the violation or disabling the port. MAC addresses can be configured statically or learned dynamically. Some switches also support Sticky MAC, which allows dynamically learned addresses to be added to the configuration. Port Security supports access control within local networks and can help restrict unauthorised device connections to physical network ports.
