Power-Efficient Computing
Power-efficient computing refers to the design and use of IT systems with the aim of managing energy consumption whilst ensuring computing power is tailored to requirements. This includes the selection of suitable processors, servers, storage systems and network hardware, as well as technologies for dynamically adjusting performance and energy consumption.
Features such as power management, CPU power states, virtualisation and automated load balancing can switch unused resources to operating states with lower energy consumption. In data centres, server utilisation, cooling and power supply also play an important role.
In addition to hardware selection, power-efficient computing therefore also encompasses the configuration and continuous optimisation of the IT infrastructure. The actual energy consumption depends, amongst other things, on the hardware, workload, utilisation, configuration and operating environment.
