Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP)
Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol, or RSTP, is a network protocol designed to prevent Layer 2 loops in Ethernet networks with redundant connections. Defined by the IEEE 802.1w standard, it is an evolution of the traditional Spanning Tree Protocol. RSTP establishes a loop-free logical topology and places redundant connections into appropriate port states. If an active connection fails or the network topology changes, alternative paths can be activated significantly faster than with traditional STP. RSTP uses simplified port states and defined port roles such as Root Port, Designated Port and Alternate Port. The protocol is particularly relevant in switched enterprise, campus and industrial networks where redundant network connections and short recovery times are required.
