Ring Topology

A Ring Topology is a network structure in which individual network devices are connected to form a closed loop. Each participant has direct connections to two neighbouring devices. Data is forwarded from one device to the next until it reaches the intended recipient. Depending on the technology, transmission can be unidirectional or bidirectional. A basic ring can be vulnerable to the failure of individual connections or devices because such failures may interrupt the communication path. Redundant ring architectures and appropriate network protocols can provide alternative transmission paths and improve resilience. Ring structures are used in environments such as industrial Ethernet networks, campus networks and certain telecommunications infrastructures. They provide a structured network design and, when implemented with redundancy, can support high network availability.
