Server
A
server is a system that provides services, applications or data to other systems in the network. The term refers both to the hardware and to the software running on it, such as file, database, web, mail or virtualisation servers. Server hardware is designed for continuous operation and features multiple processor sockets, ECC memory, redundant power supplies, RAID controllers, hot-plug drive bays and management interfaces such as iLO, iDRAC or IPMI. Common form factors include rack servers measured in rack units, tower models for smaller sites and blade systems for high compute density. Through virtualisation, a single physical server hosts multiple virtual machines. Refurbished servers offer a cost-efficient option for test environments, branch offices and the expansion of existing infrastructures.
