Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
Site Reliability Engineering, or SRE, is an approach to operating complex IT systems reliably by combining software engineering practices with IT Operations. Recurring operational tasks are addressed through software and automation wherever practical. Core elements include Service Level Indicators, Service Level Objectives, monitoring, observability, incident management and error budgets. Measurable indicators enable SRE teams to assess the reliability and performance of applications and IT services. Error budgets provide a framework for balancing service stability with the introduction of changes and new functionality. SRE is particularly relevant for cloud infrastructures, distributed systems and scalable online services. Its purpose is to establish efficient IT operations in which availability, performance and scalability are systematically measured and managed through technical and organisational practices.
