Transit
Transit refers to the forwarding of network traffic through another provider's network to reach additional networks or internet destinations. IP Transit is particularly relevant, enabling an Internet Service Provider to provide an organisation or another network with connectivity to the global internet. The provider typically advertises reachable routes using the Border Gateway Protocol, or BGP, and carries traffic to external autonomous systems. Unlike peering, where two networks exchange their respective traffic directly, Transit generally provides access to additional networks through the transit provider. The service is typically provided under a commercial agreement and can be billed according to factors such as bandwidth, traffic volume, port capacity or service level. Transit is a fundamental component of internet connectivity for enterprises, data centres and Internet Service Providers.
