Undervoltage

Undervoltage describes a condition in which the electrical supply voltage falls below the operating range specified for a device or installation. Potential causes include fluctuations in the power grid, high electrical loads, faulty installations or problems with the power supply. In IT infrastructures, undervoltage can cause unstable system operation, unexpected restarts, outages or malfunctions affecting servers, switches, storage systems and other electronic equipment. Depending on their design, Uninterruptible Power Supply systems, or UPS systems, can compensate for voltage fluctuations and continue supplying connected IT hardware with suitable power during critical deviations. Monitoring the electrical supply is particularly relevant in data centres, server rooms and other environments containing business-critical IT systems.
