Unmanaged Switch

An Unmanaged Switch is a network switch that can operate without manual configuration. Once connected, it detects Ethernet devices and forwards data frames to the appropriate ports based on learned MAC addresses. Unlike Managed or Smart Switches, it generally does not provide administrative functions for VLANs, port configuration, network monitoring or advanced security policies. Unmanaged Switches primarily operate at Layer 2 of the OSI model and are suitable for straightforward network environments where centralised management is not required. Typical use cases include small offices, workgroups or simple expansion of existing Ethernet networks. Depending on the model, additional hardware capabilities such as Power over Ethernet or different Ethernet speeds may be supported without requiring extensive configuration.
