Network hubs: simple data distribution in LAN environments

A network hub is a central connection element in network technology that forwards signals to all connected devices. Even though modern switches are more commonly used today, network hubs remain relevant in certain scenarios—such as in test environments, for simple signal distribution, or in legacy systems.

What is a network hub?

A hub in a network works on the principle of signal forwarding: incoming data packets are sent to all ports simultaneously without filtering or addressing. This distinguishes it from a switch, which directs data to a specific destination.

Typical characteristics:

  • No routing or switching
  • No addressing (MAC tables)
  • Data traffic is forwarded to all ports

When is a network hub useful?

Network hubs are suitable for:

  • Simple LAN structures without high data loads
  • Network analysis and monitoring (e.g., with packet sniffers)
  • Legacy systems with static cabling
  • Situations where LAN splitters without power or LAN hubs without power supplies are required

They are also still in use as network USB hubs for special embedded systems or industrial devices.

Variants and technical features

There are different types of network hubs depending on the application scenario and device type:

  • Network hub 2 port / 8 port / 12 port: For small to medium-sized structures
  • LAN hub Gigabit: For applications with higher data volumes
  • WLAN hub: Devices for wireless signal transmission (rarely in the classic hub sense)
  • LAN hub without power supply: For energy-saving, passive scenarios
  • LAN splitter without power: For simple physical connections, no real network distribution.

A network hub is not a smart device—it sends data blindly to all ports. This can increase network load and is therefore only suitable for very simple or specialized applications.

Buying an network hub: What to look for?

When buying a hub for your network, check the following:

  • Number of ports (e.g., 8 ports, 12 ports)
  • Power supply (active/passive)
  • Data transfer rate (10/100 Mbit or Gigabit)
  • Design (desktop, industrial housing)
