Backhaul

Backhaul refers to the transmission link between the access network and the core network of a network operator. Traffic from local network segments such as mobile sites, access points or distribution nodes is aggregated and forwarded to the backbone. Backhaul connections are implemented using fibre optic cables, microwave links, copper cabling or satellite connections. The performance of the backhaul link determines the bandwidth, latency and stability of the entire network segment. Backhaul plays a central role in mobile networks based on 4G and 5G, in campus networks and in wireless mesh systems. A high-capacity backhaul infrastructure is essential for growing data volumes, real-time applications and IoT services. It therefore forms a key element for the availability and quality of modern communication networks.
