Configuration Management Database (CMDB)

A Configuration Management Database, or CMDB, is a central database used to document and manage IT components and their relationships. The recorded elements are known as Configuration Items (CIs) and can include servers, switches, routers, applications, virtual systems and cloud resources. In addition to technical information, a CMDB stores dependencies and connections between individual components. This provides IT teams with a structured overview of the organisation’s IT infrastructure. A CMDB is commonly used in IT Service Management and ITIL environments. It supports processes such as Configuration Management, Change Management and Incident Management by helping organisations understand how changes or disruptions may affect connected systems and services.
