Unmanaged
Unmanaged refers to network components that have no configuration interface and operate without setup once connected. An unmanaged switch forwards data packets based on the MAC address table but offers no functions such as VLANs, spanning tree, quality of service, link aggregation, port security or SNMP monitoring. This means there are no options for segmentation, prioritisation or targeted fault analysis. Such devices are used in small network segments, at individual workplaces, in meeting rooms or for simple port expansion. Their advantages are low procurement costs and straightforward commissioning. In corporate networks with IP telephony, guest access, video surveillance or separated production areas, managed switches are required, as only these provide the necessary control and visibility.
